  • Vienna: Brahms & Nada is the second album in a series of five by Pianist Nada of Johannes Brahms works for solo piano.

Included in this second album are:

Rhapsody No 2: A favorite of the composer, it is one of the most strikingly unique pieces I have ever encountered in all romantic repertoire. Keenly aware of his powerful musical thought engendering themes and structures, I play with determination the first two ascending notes, D and E flat, which brings shortly another theme on the same motive full of anguish. I love following with another work where the musical speech opens on the same pattern of rhythm.

Chorale: This is a monumental piece, the most imposing of his 11 Chorales. Starting with B descending to G, those are the notes of the first fugue. Six consecutive fugues are organized in a crescendo following the words of the text. The last fugue subject is based on three notes, as we enter the Kingdom of the Lord saying “Hear Lord, your servant sings loud in three rejoices.” I respected precisely the composer's writing and added basses to the Chorale notes initially written for the organ’s pedal set.

Rhapsody No 1: Brahms is a prominent personality throughout Europe when he publishes his Klavierstucke Op. 79. The title Rhapsodies, which he accepted reluctantly, was suggested by his friend and dedicatee, singer and composer Elisabeth von Herzogenberg. Full of feverish and breathless emotions contrasting with a tender middle part, it is a popular piece, a glimpse of Brahms himself, in just a few pages.

Waltzes Op. 39: His newly adopted city, Vienna, inspired him to write these 16 miniature waltzes. They unexpectedly brought him some income and an important friendship, Eduard Hanslick, an influential music critic in Vienna, to whom they are dedicated. Despite their deceiving clarity making them accessible to the Viennese public, there is just so much music in every note, and, indeed, some Hungarian gypsy influence.

Variations: The only set based on his own theme (apart from the earlier Variations on his sextet published after his death), he is by then 28 years old. They go beyond everything he has previously written at this time. A mastery of beautiful imagination which simply takes you to paradise, they are one of the most perfect set of variations ever written for the piano.

I have become so enraptured and emotionally at ease in Johannes Brahms' universe of sounds that I am deeply convinced this magnificent music is simply timeless for anyone, musician and listener.

  • “There is no doubting Nada’s resonance with Brahms’ writing: she explores the quicksilver Variations on a Hungarian Theme with aplomb, and finds dignity in the Bach/Brahms Chaconne, the Baroque gestures beautifully melding with the more Romantic pedaling.” ★★★★
