Nada Meets Johannes Brahms is the third album in a series of five by Pianist Nada of Johannes Brahms works for solo piano.
Included in this third album is Nada’s “inner conversation” with Brahms:
Sarabande and Gigue
Nada: “In this recital, I have juxtaposed some of your earliest and latest pieces. What attracted you to writing dances from the Baroque era?
Brahms: “There is something majestic about a Sarabande, expressive and melancholic; the Gigue is an exercise in counterpoint I had no intention to publish.”
Nada: “They are striking by their novelty and they are difficult to play. I love them!”
Ballades
Nada: “The presence of Robert Schumann is everywhere. I feel it in your mind and consciousness.”
Brahms: “I express at my best what I see unfolding in the life of the Schumanns at that time. In the 1st Ballade, the tragic “Edward,” is a pretext to reveal some of the complexity of my emotions and despair. The D Major Ballade is an escape into the beauty of the German landscapes interrupted by some crazy and fiery dreams. The “Intermezzo”: the title is directly inspired by Schumann and his own duality is in music. The 4th Ballade: it’s a deep reflection about him.”
Nada: “These are some of the most incredible pages about emotional impressionism like no other music is. For example, in the middle section of the 4th Ballade, a recollection of the waters of the Rhine which attracted Schumann so much, and, towards the end, there is stillness in a form of a chorale. They are a real narrative of your soul and everything you were seeing and feeling!”
Klavierstücke
Nada: “1. A world of loneliness, a succession of astonishing chords with no resolution, mirroring the musical world of the 1890s: I ask ‘Where will expressive music go?’ 2. The same four notes on which the breathless first section is built are also the theme of the delicious Viennese Ländler of the middle section, all invaded by deep nostalgia. 3. A light hearted Intermezzo with unsettling rhythms. 4. I was, I am, I shall be: a heroic expression of who you are and what you stand for, including your influences from Hungarian Gypsies, ending brilliantly in E flat minor.”
Brahms: “Absolutely!!! I had the same fierce drive in my first piece!”
Scherzo
Nada: “It is incredible how strong your personality comes across. This was your calling card of your early years, a display of your virtuosity, a signature of your already very powerful language! I wanted this program to be a portrait of your deepest and most adventurous self, from beginning to end, with you.”

“This is a gorgeous Brahms piano program from beginning to end, one that largely avoids duplicating many of the composer’s more familiar works encountered on so many discs, and one that showcases the exceptional playing and artistry of Nada. Very strongly recommended.”
