Class of 2023: Deluxe Edition is Ghanian rapper Pope Nst’s 2nd album on the MEII Enterprises label. The album was produced by Prince “Ipappi” Fosu.
Like his debut album C.I.T.I.Z.E.N., Pope Nst’s raps in English, Pidgin and Twi (the language native to Ghana) and each song is based on his lived-experience.
As the title Class of 2023: Deluxe Edition suggests all the songs on this album were born out of his university experience while studying at the University of Ghana Medical School.
Pope Nst describes key songs from the Class of 2023: Deluxe Edition album:
Holione: The title means “Holy One.” The inspiration behind this song is the name “God.” I think everything happening in my life is by the grace of the creator: being alive, the wisdom, the understanding, the knowledge, the perseverance, and the music. The introduction on this track is a recording I made from a traditional choir “Golden Bells” of an Assemblies of God Church I visited in Hohoe, a town in the Volta region of Ghana. God is everlasting and he deserves all the glory.
Korama: Korama describes that special one. It brings the goodness of a loved one to life. The song is real, not just fiction. It took me three years to finish it. A few days after I had released my single “I.S Girl” in 2019, I met Korama and Yasmin, classmates, on my way to the library. Korama said she loves my music and even plays it to her mom, so I should use her name in one of my songs. Funny enough, I wrote a song for her in 2020. I didn’t like it. I recorded another one in 2021 and I didn’t like it either. Finally, I conceived this piece for her in 2022. I hope she enjoys it.
Kogara: “Kogara” means “I’m fine" in Kassem, the local language of the people of Navrongo. God is my everything and I am grateful for how far he has brought me. I stayed and studied in Navrongo, a town in the upper east of Ghana, for six trimesters before entering medical school. It was such an adventure and experience, living in the northern part of the country, so far away from home.
UGMS: This is an acronym for University of Ghana Medical School. An idea to write a song for my school came up after our 60th anniversary celebration in March 2022. I chose the highlife genre because I wanted something both alumni and current students can relate to. I have recorded over 50 songs and this is the only one I didn’t rap. So I think it’s special.
You No Be God: Shout-out to Antonia Annoh, my classmate. Her voice note was perfect for the intro. This is a love song, I started on a hard note to capture the needed attention for the message it carries. We should try our best to show love and help one another. As the legend Akwasi Ampofo Adjei said: “If you do good, you do for yourself.”
New Day: Hayford Amenano (a colleague) is on the intro. This track is a great breakfast before work. This is the first song I wrote when I finally got admission to study medicine in Legon. I had to write my high school final exam and medical school entrance exam twice because I didn’t qualify on the first attempt. Anything is possible. Don’t stop. Keep pushing until you hit the target.
