The seeds of Hard Bop Hanukkah were planted over ten years ago as musical director of my synagogue’s congregation jazz band. We worked under the title, “Blue Suede Jews,” arranging and performing music for each major Jewish holiday throughout the year, including Hanukkah.
When I revisited the arrangements years later for this album, it was only natural to look to the Hard Bop era of jazz for inspiration. The history of Hard Boppers fusing music from their own unique and diverse cultural backgrounds with the complexities of be-bop, coupled with my own passion and background for Hard Bop made it a perfect breeding ground for this project.
The arrangements and playing you’ll hear throughout the album pay homage to some of the many heroes of this era while never straying from the familiar melodies and festive nature of these Hanukkah classics we all know and love.
I would like to thank my good friend and pianist on this record, Sam Javitch, for the extra motivational push to finish these arrangements and have them performed. Of course, I couldn’t have done this without the hard swinging musicianship and enthusiasm of not only Sam, but also Cole Davis (bass) and Evan Sherman (drums).
I would like to extend warmth and gratitude to Rockwood Music Hall for hosting and recording the performance, along with each and every audience member in participation that evening.
Lastly, special thanks to Gene Marlow for encouraging me to record and release this performance and of course MEII Enterprises for all the hard work and creativity that went into the release.
