Five Children Playing on a Sunday Afternoon
Five Children Playing on a Sunday Afternoon is conceived as a compressed tale of five British children (aged six or seven) who come together one Sunday afternoon around the turn of the 20th century to play. The group comprised of three boys and two girls. Each child is represented by one of the instruments in the woodwind quartet/piano quintet.
While normally a play-date of this kind would last several hours, the entire afternoon has been compressed into less than six minutes.
The piece is divided into compacted sections, as follows:
1. The children gather to play
2. “Hey, that’s my toy!”
3. Nap time
4. Waking up
5. “Let’s play King and Queen”
6. “Let’s play war”
7. A real fight

Clearly, this group is “boys will be boys” dominated. The squabbling over toys starts early. Even after a nap (the woodwind quartet, sans piano) and an attempt by the girls to bring some semblance of dignity to the proceedings (“Let’s play king and queen”), the boys natural tendencies descend into “Let’s play war” that ultimately leads to a real fight.
It is an afternoon filled with some moments of playfulness, but most of the time it is a whirlwind of chaos and discord.
This live recording was performed by the Sylvan Winds at a concert of new music mounted by the New York Composers Circle at the Baruch Performing Arts Center, New York City.
